i meant to, and i did it.

Questa è quella parte di Istanbul che non è proprio reclamizzata… ma guardandole uno si fa l’idea di che aria si respira in questa città. O come si direbbe in inglese, THE REAL VIBE OF THE CITY!!

Faccio una carrellata delle giornate:

Giovedi:

Un pò persa con il volo e tutto, ma finita con una gran cena a base di pesce in un ristorantino con saletta che affaccia direttamente lo stretto del bosforo.

Alla cena è seguita una totale percuisizione da una pattuglia della polizia che ci ha fermato, e dopo che abbiamo visto che il ragazzo turco che era con noi era stato trattenuto un pò di più… pensieri della serie “oddio, questo tizio è alla fine un trafficante d’armi” fortuna non era così…

Direi che se devo dare un voto al caos in città… questa città è decisamente nei primi posti: Nessuno rispetta i limiti, sorpassi sia a destra che a sinistra… quasi come Roma insomma, con la differenza che là fumano come turchi (hahaha…)

Venerdì:

Iniziamo presto, ci troviamo con i nostri contatti e andiamo nella loro azienda, anche perchè l’hotel è in asia e l’azienda è in europa, per cui ci voleva un pò…

Da lì in poi iniziano ore e ore di traduzione italiano-inglese e viceversa, e fino qua tutto ok… i problemi iniziarono quando le discussioni diventavano troppo tecniche… come faccio a tradurre in inglese qualcosa che non so neppure in italiano cosa vuol dire?? Ma a parte questi momenti, gli incontri sono andati bene, hanno già pianificato altri incontri in Italia percui posso ritenere di aver fatto la mia parte bene…

Alla fine della giornata la gente che era con me è tornata in Italia, e io sono rimasto per conto mio per il weekend dato che avevo intenzione di vedere la città…

Sabato:

Comincia il tour de force… quanto ho camminato quel giorno!!

Devo dire che a) la densità di gatti/km² è impressionante! b) quasi tutti vendono tappeti o hanno un parente che li vende… c) i kebab che fanno là non assomigliano per niente ai kebab che trovi a Londra o in Italia…

Domenica:

Visitato le ultime cose, dopo i muscoli delle gambe non mi hanno permesso oltre. Ho visitato il mercato delle spezie e ho visto questo…

A me sembra un pò disumano, ovviamente le nostre culture sono un pò diverse…

Alla sera si va a vedere Italia-Spagna, e ovviamente senza volere mi ritrovo in un bar pieno zeppo di spagnoli… percui insomma, il mio era un pò un tifo “silenzioso”… supporto telepatico se vogliamo metterla così

Lunedi:

Giornata passata interamente tra aereoporti e aerei… Alla mattina in 40 minuti sono in aereoporto, prendendo un taxi che non è mai sceso sotto i 110km/h, arrivo in aereoporto e dopo 2 ispezioni riesco ad imbarcarmi.

Volo in business class! Anche se mi aspettavo molto di più… ok le poltrone erano un pò più larghe ma nulla di chè… se non per quella tendina che separava i 9 posti della business class con quelli della economy: ogni volta che quella tendina veniva chiusa ti sentivi un privilegiato!

As I’m doing interviews for my dissertation, and each one of them must be recorded and transcribed, i started to wonder what i could use to record it….

bring with me the laptop? a bit too big as a recording device…
buy a voice recorder? but i have to spend money for something i will never use again…

use the mobile? ok i can do that… but i have to buy a decent recorder because i haven’t find one free on internet… and i really hate the idea of spending even only 10bucks. But frankly, it’s not about the money, it’s about the idea: Why i should spend money for doing something that is so damn simple? Input from the microphone -> Output in a file.

So i made my own voice recorder: I used Python for Symbian and i used this script to record:

As you can see, this is not exactly a cutting-edge software that turn your mobile in a recording station. But it does its job, and i would say, it’s doing it pretty well so far. I already recorded 6-7 hours and the “amr” quality is sufficient, in my opinion, for transcribing purposes.

What you need is: A symbian phone, Python for nokia, bluetooth for sending the file to the pc and it’s done!

P.S. You’d better put the phone in offline state when recording, otherwise when you receive a call the phone will stop recording.

In questa settimana e mezzo che sono rimasto in Italia sono riuscito a fare 8 interviste, il chè non è male… anche perchè i manager sono probabilmente le persone più introvabili e occupate in assoluto.

Sono rimasto poco tempo questa volta. Sono tornato a casa con l’intenzione di stare per 1 settimana e mezzo, poi è capitata questa occasione di andare ad Istanbul per il fine settimana… percui ho esteso un pò il soggiorno. Parto oggi pomeriggio!

Altre cose degne di essere menzionate:
- Tempo schifoso: Ogni mia speranza di andare al mare o solamente in piscina è stata brutalmente cancellata
- Compleanno di Topo: Eravamo all’Osteria della Bettola (Podere Elisa), posto splendido in mezzo alle colline reggiane. Mangiato bene, posto immerso nel verde, una bella giornata…
- Obiettivo nuovo per la reflex… terreno di test: Istanbul!

Per chi non sapesse cosa è: detta in parole semplici è un sostituto di Internet Explorer, serve per visualizzare pagine web. Rispetto a Internet Explorer è molto più… veloce/estensibile/personalizzabile/figo.

THE GIFT AND SKILLS TO MANAGE GROUP DYNAMICS AND INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES ARE KEY COMPETENCES WITHIN A WORK-GROUP SESSION. EXPAND ON THIS STATEMENT FROM A FACILITATION PERSPECTIVE.

Group dynamics rule the group life, and how individuals enter and leave groups. Among people’s needs there is the search for a greater sense of belonging, especially to the groups that well represent the personality of the individual. Humans are social beings, they cannot avoid to gather together in groups and they have satisfaction in doing it. This is important because a group widens the perspectives of the individual, a group makes possible the cooperation among individuals to achieve goals together and more easily.
Groups work well when they are not too small or too big, a good number is between 3 and 9-11. Less than that cannot be considered a proper group, and more than that is likely that the group will fragment in subgroups, people will feel less satisfied because they lose their identity in such big groups.
Every group has their own norms, usually unspoken, like dressing codes or behaviours, and if a group member breaks them then the group will punish him. The punishment can be any sort of things, from a more direct exclusion, or penalty, to a more subtle, unspoken, bad consideration.
Sometimes group’s unspoken norms can be very strict, and people who, willing or not, are part of this group has to conform to these norms, although they does not accept them. These groups, where the conformity is very high, are very likely to be subject of the groupthink effect, when everybody conforms to the opinion of outstanding elements, without having the sense of safety or the willingness to argue. On the other hand, if the conformity is too low at any stage, the group cannot act as a whole therefore there is no sense to be part of this group. Consequently, a good balance between agreement and disagreement has to be present if the group has to work correctly.
Effective groups, especially in working environments, are the ones that make use of individuals differences. Diversity inside a group is important especially when the group is facing new and challenging tasks. Diversity means different backgrounds therefore the group can utilize different viewpoints while elaborating a solution. Diversity also means different behaviours, different strengths and weaknesses for each member, therefore anyone can find their best position inside the team.
Individual differences could be seen in many ways, one of them is the Jungian typology, that individuates 4 types of tendencies, introvert thinker, extrovert thinker, extrovert feeler and introvert feeler. Everyone of these characters has their own strengths and weaknesses, people can be more task-oriented, more people-oriented, more focused on putting things in the right place, etc…
All that has been introduced is important to understand how people work together, and the person that is leading these meetings has to be aware of them in order to get the best out of these dynamics.
Groups are not, normally, doing their best. They need a leader who can show them the way and facilitate them to operate in the best way they can. As long as the group acknowledge the authority of the leader, the leader, acting in a facilitative way, will have the knowledge and the attitude to make them work effectively. Group dynamics can be changed, group norms can be modified if this is helpful for achieving established goals, conformity can be promoted or not in case it is helpful or dangerous.
In addition to this, a facilitative leader will recognize the strengths of each member of the team and use these differences. Let’s just think to how bad will be the impact of a wrong choice of person as a salesman.
Both aspects previously mentioned are key points for the effectiveness of the group, and the facilitator, in quality of leader, is the responsible for making this happen.

Questo è un pò quello che sto facendo adesso… tesi, ricerca, interviste…

L’argomento su cui sto scrivendo è “The relevance of emotional intelligence in developing the next level of management: leadership”. In pratica è una ricerca che faccio intervistando persone che sono in una posizione di leadership, che possa essere a grandi o piccoli livelli, per cui dirigenti/responsabili/middle managers/proprietari di aziende/etc…

La mia routine in pratica è: trova la persona adatta/fagli compilare un questionario/chiedere appuntamento/fargli l’intervista registrando tutto/transcrivi l’intervista/analisi della trascrizione.

Alcuni passaggi sono interessanti, riesci a conoscere persone che sono molto più in gamba di te, altri di una noia mortale, da spararsi… e qua mi riferisco in pratica solamente alla trascrizione: 40minuti di parlato diventano circa 6 ore di play/pausa/scrivi/play/pausa/scrivi!

Questo è stato fatto dal Peach Project, un gruppo di 7 artisti che si sono trasferiti per 6 mesi ad Amsterdam, finanziati dalla Blender Foundation per lavorare a tempo pieno a questo cortometraggio…

Direi che è veramente ben fatto!! Bella storia, e decisamente begli effetti.

Questo è il primo che han realizzato, creato da un altro team battezzato Orange Project, sempre organizzato ad Amsterdam dalla Blender Foundation. Questo è decisamente troppo malato per me…

Nel caso non sappiate cos’è la Blender Foundation, è la fondazione che gestisce lo sviluppo di Blender, un programma di modellazione 3D totalmente libero! Questi progetti sono degli specie di “test sul campo” per perfezionare questo software…

Tutti questi filmati sono rilasciati sotto licenza creative commons, per cui “teoricamente” potreste prendere il coniglio protagonista del cartone (che secondo me fa un pò paura a guardarlo) e dargli una forma meno abominevole

Meraviglioso… ieri pomeriggio nella metro di Londra era il caos, specialmente sulla circle line, l’unica linea fatta ad anello, senza capolinea.

La ragione di tutto ciò è che da oggi in poi il nuovo sindaco ha dichiarato che non sarà più possibile bere bevande alcoliche in ogni mezzo pubblico. La cosa non ha causato poche polemiche, e tutto è culminato a ieri dove circa 4000 (quattromila!) persone si sono fiondate sulla tube. Alcuni con l’intenzione di farsi un goccetto di vino, altri con intenzioni meno innocue. Noi abbiamo fatto la nostra parte…
